Survey
Are you parent or legal guardian to a child aged three or four? I invite you to take part in this survey about children and media. It forms part of my PhD research into television and media in the lives of New Zealand children.
The survey is anonymous. No names or other identification details will be used.
The research involves 250 families like yours with children aged three to five. Families have been selected randomly across New Zealand.
There is little current information about the role of television and media in the lives of young children, what they use and watch, when, where, and why. The findings of the survey will help parents, educators, regulators, programme makers and advertisers understand what factors influence young children’s television viewing and other media usage, and how it contributes to fun and learning.
Results of the survey, coupled with the next stages of the research project can help establish guidelines for appropriate television viewing and other media use for young children.
So your input is hugely valuable. Thank you for your time.

Notes:
The survey is being conducted under the supervision of Geoff Lealand, Associate Professor of Screen and Media Studies at the University of Waikato.
The questionnaire is based on the Princeton Survey Research Associates questionnaire used in the research study by Rideout, Vandewater & Wartella (2003) and Hamel and Rideout (2006) of US children aged 0-6. Questions have been adapted for New Zealand and will enable useful comparisons to be made between the US and NZ.

Annemarie Quill is a writer, editor, media researcher and mum to three children.
